About Xiamen University
Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by the renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is the first university in modern Chinese history established by an overseas Chinese. It is a key comprehensive university under China’s “Project 211” and “Project 985,” and is listed in the national “Double First-Class” initiative.
Located along the scenic Xiamen Bay, surrounded by mountains and sea, XMU is recognized as one of the most beautiful universities in the world.
1. Application Eligibility
(1) Basic Requirements
-
Applicants must be aged 18–30 (before September 1, 2026), in good physical and mental health, and hold a valid foreign passport. Applicants under 18 must provide a guardian’s letter of guarantee.

Must have a high school diploma or be a current high school graduate with good academic performance.

Scholarship applicants must meet specific requirements for the chosen scholarship program.
(2) Nationality Requirements
-
According to relevant regulations, applicants who are foreign nationals of Chinese origin or whose parents are Chinese citizens must provide documentation for nationality verification. The Public Security Bureau will confirm nationality status after enrollment. Applicants who fail verification will lose their eligibility for admission.

As per Article 5 of the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China, those born abroad to Chinese parents who have settled overseas and obtained foreign nationality are not Chinese nationals.

Applicants must have held a valid foreign passport for at least 4 years (as of April 30, 2026).
-
They must have lived abroad for at least 2 years during the last 4 years (9 months abroad per year counts as one full year).
-
Applicants from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan who have obtained foreign nationality must also meet this requirement.

(3) Language Requirements
Chinese-taught programs:
-
Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Management, Law, and Arts majors: HSK Level 5 (≥210).

Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Sports majors: HSK Level 4 (≥210).

Applicants whose high school instruction was in Chinese may provide a school certificate instead of HSK.
English-taught programs:

TOEFL iBT ≥80 (Code: C310) or IELTS Academic ≥6.0.

Applicants whose high school instruction was in English may provide a school certificate instead of TOEFL/IELTS.
-
Applicants from English-speaking countries are exempt from English test requirements.

Other equivalent English proficiency certificates recognized by XMU are also accepted.

Applicants for CSC Type A Scholarship or International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship should apply through designated official platforms.
3. Required Application Documents

Current students may submit a pre-graduation certificate and transcripts; final diploma required upon enrollment.

Personal statement (≥800 words): self-introduction, study background, goals, and career plan. Written in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs and in English for English-taught programs.

Letter of Acceptance/Intention (optional) — applicants with this letter have priority.

Physical examination form, chest X-ray, ECG, and lab reports (valid within 6 months).

Financial support statement (required for all applicants, including scholarship applicants).

Non-criminal record certificate (issued within 6 months).

Portfolio and certificates (for Art majors or other achievements). Upload in the “Other Supporting Materials” section.
Notes:
Once submitted, application materials cannot be modified. Ensure all documents are true and complete.
Documents in languages other than Chinese/English must include notarized translations.
Hard copies are not required unless specifically requested. Documents will not be returned.
4. Majors and Duration
XMU adopts a broad-based education model. Freshmen study general courses before entering their specific majors.

Most undergraduate programs: 4–5 years

Upon completing all required courses, students will receive a Bachelor’s Degree and Graduation Certificate issued by Xiamen University.
5. Fees

Fees are charged per academic year in RMB and exclude textbooks. Subject to government approval.

6. Scholarships
(1) Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A – Bilateral Program)
Apply through your home country’s dispatching authorities or the Chinese Embassy/Consulate.
Application period: January to early April (varies by country).
(2) Chinese Government Scholarship (Type B – University Program)
Open to outstanding students applying directly to XMU (Agency Code: 10384).
Apply through both XMU system (application.xmu.edu.cn) and CSC system (studyinchina.csc.edu.cn).
(3) International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
Supports students and Chinese teachers to study Chinese language and culture.
Apply through cis.chinese.cn or your local Confucius Institute.
Available for Bachelor’s in Chinese International Education (Education Track).
(4) Fujian Provincial Government Scholarship
Provides funding of:

RMB 30,000 for Bachelor’s,

RMB 40,000 for Master’s,

RMB 50,000 for Ph.D.

(5) Tan Kah Kee Scholarship (Suspended)
Established by the Tan Kah Kee Education Foundation to support outstanding students of Chinese descent from Maritime Silk Road countries.
(6) Xiamen University Freshman Scholarship
Each year, XMU selects a number of excellent new undergraduate students for tuition exemption. Apply through the university’s online system.
