How Many Solar Panels Do You Actually Need? A Simple Guide

20-May-2026

One of the most common questions homeowners and businesses ask before switching to solar is :

“How many solar panels do I actually need?”

The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. It depends on your electricity usage, location, panel wattage, and system efficiency. But the good news is, you can estimate it using a few simple formulas.

Step 1: Understand Your Energy Usage (kWh)

Your electricity bill usually shows your monthly usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Let’s say :
  • Monthly usage = 600 kWh
  • Daily usage = 600 ÷ 30 = 20 kWh/day
This is the first key number you need.

Step 2: Estimate Sun Hours (Peak Sun Hours)

Solar panels don’t produce energy all day at full power. We use Peak Sun Hours (PSH).

In Malaysia, average PSH ≈
3 to 4 hours/day

We’ll use :
  • PSH = 3.5 hours/day

Step 3: Calculate Required Solar System Size (kW)

Formula :
Solar System Size (kWp) = Daily Energy Usage (kWh)/Peak Sun Hours
Example :
System Size = 20/3.5 = 5.71 kW

So you need roughly a 5.71 kW solar system

Step 4: Convert System Size into Number of Panels

Now we calculate how many panels you need.
Generally,
solar panels that we used are : 640W - 710W = 0.64 kW -  per panel

Formula :
Number of Panels = Daily Energy Usage (kWh)/(Peak Sun Hours * Solar Panel Watt Rating (Watt)

Example :
Number of Panels = 20 kWh/(3.5 * 640W)
                       = 20 kWh/(2.24W)
                     = 8.9 unit solar panel

You would need approximately 9 solar panels

Ready to Find Out How Many Solar Panels You Need?

Every home and business uses electricity differently, which means the right solar system should be designed specifically for your energy usage, roof space, and long-term savings goals.

Instead of guessing, get a proper solar assessment and discover :
  • How much you can save monthly
  • The ideal system size for your property
  • Estimated ROI and payback period
  • Whether your roof is suitable for solar

Whether you're a homeowner looking to reduce electricity bills or a business planning to control operational costs, solar can be a smart long-term investment.
