Great news for existing solar users! On 1 July 2025, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) announced that the government will continue the offset system for extra solar energy produced under two programs — MBIPV and NEM.
So far, over 82,000 solar systems are already running, with another 14,000 systems being built. This shows how many Malaysians have already joined the move toward clean energy!
Even though the new electricity tariff started on 1 July 2025, PETRA confirmed that current solar users can still enjoy offset benefits:
-
MBIPV users will get a 5-year offset until 31 December 2030.
-
NEM 1.0 users will get a 10-year offset until 31 December 2035.
-
NEM 2.0 & 3.0 users will continue to enjoy up to 10 years of offset from the date their system starts running.
-
NEM NOVA users will be paid based on average system price.
To make things simpler, all solar programs will now follow a standard 12-month settlement period for calculating offset — no more confusion!
For those whose offset period has ended, don’t worry — you can still switch to other programs like:
-
Solar for Self-Consumption (SelCo)
-
Community Renewable Energy Aggregation (CREAM)
-
Or install a battery system at home.
Please note that the NEM program officially ended on 30 June 2025, but new solar installations will continue under the SelCo program with improvements coming soon.
This move supports the country’s green energy goals, aiming for 70% renewable electricity by the year 2050.
