Transistor Replacement Principles - Utsource Holding Company Limited

Transistor Replacement Principles

26-May-2026

Mastering the principles of transistor replacement can significantly improve repair efficiency and make the work much more efficient. The principles of transistor replacement can be summarized in three points: same type, similar characteristics, and similar appearance.
I. Same Type
1. Same Material
That is, replace a germanium transistor with a germanium transistor, and a silicon transistor with a silicon transistor.

2. Same Polarity
That is, replace an NPN transistor with an NPN transistor, and a PNP transistor with a PNP transistor.

II. Similar Characteristics
The transistor used for replacement should have characteristics similar to the original transistor; their main parameter values and characteristic curves should be similar. There are nearly 20 main parameters for transistors, and requiring all of them to be similar is not only difficult but also unnecessary. Generally, as long as the following main parameters are similar, the replacement requirements are met:
1. Maximum DC Power Dissipation of the Collector (Pcm)
Generally, it is required to replace with a transistor with a Pcm equal to or larger than that of the original transistor. However, if calculations or tests show that the actual DC power dissipation of the original transistor in the overall circuit is much less than its Pcm, then a transistor with a smaller Pcm can be used for replacement.

2. Maximum Allowable DC Current at the Collector (Icm)
Generally, a transistor with an Icm equal to or larger than that of the original transistor should be used for replacement.

3. Breakdown Voltage
The transistor used for replacement must be able to safely withstand the highest operating voltage in the overall circuit.

4. Frequency Characteristics
The following two are commonly used transistor frequency characteristic parameters:
(1) Characteristic Frequency fT: This refers to the frequency at which the common-emitter current amplification factor of the transistor is maximized when the test frequency is sufficiently high.

(2) Cutoff Frequency fb: When replacing a transistor, Ft and fb are the main considerations. It is generally required that the Ft and fb of the transistor used for replacement should not be less than the corresponding Ft and Fb of the original transistor.

5. Other Parameters
In addition to the above main parameters, for some special transistors, the following parameters should also be considered during replacement:
(1) For low-noise transistors, a transistor with a smaller or equal noise figure should be used for replacement. (2) For transistors with automatic gain control (AGC) characteristics, a transistor with the same AGC characteristics should be used for replacement.

(3) For switching transistors, their switching parameters should also be considered during replacement.

III. Similar Appearance
Small power transistors generally have similar appearances. As long as the electrode leads are clearly marked and the lead arrangement is consistent with the transistor to be replaced, replacement is possible. High power transistors have significantly different appearances. When replacing them, transistors with similar appearances and the same mounting dimensions should be selected to ensure proper installation and heat dissipation.
