Freehold vs Leasehold — What’s the Real Difference? - Unimax Estate Sdn Bhd
Freehold vs Leasehold — What’s the Real Difference?
13-Oct-2025
This is one of the most common questions every homebuyer asks:
“My agent says Freehold is better, but Leasehold is so much cheaper… what’s the catch?”
Let’s break it down
Freehold
You (and your future generations) own the land forever
Easier to sell later on
Banks usually approve loans faster
Usually more expensive
Leasehold
Typically 10–20% cheaper than nearby Freehold units
Developments are often newer with modern facilities
Lease period decreases over time (usually 99 or 60 years)
Selling or refinancing can be more complicated
So, which should you choose?
If you’re buying for your own stay and plan to hold long-term, Freehold is the safer, more stable choice.
But if you’re buying for investment and plan to sell within 5–10 years, Leasehold can still be profitable — as long as you choose the right location.
The key isn’t just the land title — it’s the storyline behind your purchase.
(Location + Demand + Purpose = Real Value)
