When people hear “Universal Testing Machine (UTM),” the first thing that comes to mind is usually a Tensile Test.
I’ve shared quite a few posts about Tensile Testing, Compression Testing, and Bend/Flexural Testing before…
During a recent seminar, one of our senior colleagues, who is also a Director at Victor, shared an interesting reminder:
A UTM is far more versatile than many people think.
Besides tensile, compression, and bending tests, a UTM can also perform a Peel Test with the appropriate fixture.
So, what is a Peel Test?
A Peel Test measures the force required to separate two bonded materials, helping engineers evaluate the adhesion strength between substrates.
It is commonly used for:
Adhesive tapes
Labels
Laminated materials
Protective films
Bonded components
During the test, the specimen is peeled at a controlled speed while the UTM continuously records the peel force, providing valuable data on bond strength and adhesive performance.
This is another great example of why it’s called a Universal Testing Machine—it isn’t limited to just one type of mechanical test.
A big thank you to our senior colleague for sharing this valuable insight during the seminar. Continuous learning and knowledge sharing help us better support our customers with the right testing solutions.
If you’d like to learn more about Peel Testing or other mechanical testing services, feel free to reach out. We’d be happy to discuss your testing requirements.
