Gloss Testing

26-Jun-2026

What is Gloss?

Gloss is the measure of light reflection from a surface at a specific angle. It is typically evaluated using a gloss meter, commonly following standards such as ISO 2813.

* High gloss surface → more specular reflection (mirror-like finish)

* Low gloss surface → more diffuse reflection (matte appearance)

How is Gloss Testing Performed?

We carried out Gloss Testing using a Rhopoint Gloss Meter to evaluate the surface finish quality of a sample.

Step-by-Step Gloss Testing Procedure

1. Instrument Calibration

Before any measurement is taken, the gloss meter is calibrated using a certified gloss calibration standard supplied by the manufacturer. This ensures measurement accuracy and traceability.

2. Surface Preparation

The sample surface is cleaned to remove dust, fingerprints, oil, or other contaminants that may affect the reading.

3. Positioning the Instrument

The gloss meter is placed firmly on the test surface, ensuring full contact and proper alignment.

4. Taking Measurements

The instrument projects a beam of light onto the surface at a specified angle and measures the amount of reflected light.

5. Recording Results

The gloss value is displayed in Gloss Units (GU). Multiple readings are usually taken at different locations to assess surface consistency.
