Proof Rolling Test
The Proof Rolling Test is a qualitative field test that evaluates the uniformity, stability, and load-bearing capability of compacted subgrades and pavement layers. Although not defined by a single ASTM standard, it is frequently used in accordance with AASHTO and national road authorities' guidelines. The test is moving a large, loaded vehicle—usually a pneumatic-tired roller or truck—across the surface while noting deflections and deformations. Excessive rutting or movement indicates weak or insufficient compaction. Proof rolling is especially useful in the latter phases of subgrade preparation and before paving operations, since it provides a quick way of evaluating construction quality and identifying problem areas that require corrective action. By providing constant subgrade performance, the test increases pavement lifetime, decreases future maintenance requirements, and protects the structural integrity of overlaying layers.
