Ductwork Static Pressure Testing | Ventilation Systems Audit by EKG

In a modern HVAC system, Static Pressure is the resistance your fans must overcome to push air through ducts, filters, and cooling coils. If the static pressure is too high, your fan is "choked"—it consumes massive amounts of electricity while moving very little air. If it is too low, the air will not have enough "throw" to reach the far corners of your office, creating hot spots and stagnant zones.

As part of a Ventilation Systems Audit, EKG performs precision Static Pressure Testing to ensure your ductwork is optimized for the 2026 energy landscape in Kuala Lumpur.

1. Why Test for Static Pressure?

Static pressure is the "Blood Pressure" of your building's ventilation system. An audit identifies three critical mechanical failures:

  • System Effect Waste: Turbulent air at the fan outlet caused by poor duct design. This forces the motor to work 15 percent harder just to "start" the airflow.

  • Internal Blockages: Fire dampers that have accidentally tripped, collapsed internal acoustic liners, or severely dirty cooling coils that act like a brick wall to the air.

  • Inaccurate VFD Control: Most Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) rely on a static pressure sensor to decide how fast to spin. If this sensor is misplaced or uncalibrated, your fan may be running at 50Hz (Full Speed) when it only needs 35Hz.

2. The EKG "Pressure-Profile" Audit Protocol

We use digital manometers and pitot-tube arrays to map the "Resistance Path" of your AHU:

  • External Static Pressure (ESP) Audit: We measure the pressure drop across the entire system. We compare the "Actual ESP" to the fan's original "Manufacturer Curve" to see how much performance has been lost over time.

  • Component Pressure Drop Analysis: We measure the specific resistance across filters, coils, and silencers. If a cooling coil has a pressure drop of 250 Pascals (Pa) instead of the design 125 Pa, it is a clear sign that deep chemical cleaning is required.

  • Duct Traverse Testing: We measure the pressure at different points along the main riser. This identifies "Bottlenecks" where the air velocity is too high, causing friction and noise.

  • VFD Setpoint Calibration: We find the "Critical Path"—the furthest vent in the building—and determine the minimum pressure needed to satisfy it, allowing for massive energy savings.

3. The Energy Impact: The Cube Law

High static pressure is the primary driver of high energy bills. Every extra Pascal of resistance requires the fan motor to draw more Amperes.

  • Friction Reduction: By identifying and removing "Airflow Chokes," we lower the total resistance the fan must fight.

  • The Logic: Because of the Cube Law, a 20 percent reduction in fan speed (made possible by lower system resistance) results in a nearly 50 percent reduction in power consumption. Static Pressure Testing provides the "Mechanical Data" to safely lower your VFD frequencies.

4. Static Pressure Performance Matrix

Measurement Point Healthy Range (Pascals) At-Risk Sign (High Resistance)
Pre-Filters 50 to 125 Pa > 200 Pa (Clogged)
Cooling Coils 100 to 150 Pa > 250 Pa (Surface Loading)
Main Supply Duct 250 to 500 Pa > 750 Pa (Undersized/Blocked)
VAV Box Inlet 150 to 250 Pa < 100 Pa (Starvation Zone)
Return Air Path 50 to 100 Pa > 150 Pa (Closed Dampers)

5. Why Trust EKG for Static Pressure Testing?

  • Mechanical Restoration Path: If the test shows high pressure, we don't just give you a report. We are experts in Mechanical Fan Overhauls, offering chemical degreasing of coils and impellers to "Open Up" the airflow.

  • VFD ROI Projection: We calculate exactly how much money you will save by lowering your "Static Pressure Setpoint" in the BMS.

  • BOMBA & Safety Compliance: We ensure that your smoke-spill and staircase pressurization fans can maintain the required pressure to keep exit routes safe during an emergency.

  • Precision Metrology: We use NIST-calibrated digital manometers that can detect pressure changes as small as 1 Pascal, ensuring absolute accuracy.
