Server Room Humidity Control by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd

In the tropical climate of Kuala Lumpur, humidity control is often more challenging than temperature management. High outdoor humidity (often exceeding 80% RH) can lead to "tin whiskers," surface corrosion, and silver migration on PCBs. Conversely, if a cooling system removes too much moisture, low humidity can cause Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), which can fry sensitive microchips instantly.

EKG M&E Sdn Bhd provides precision humidification and dehumidification solutions designed to maintain the ASHRAE-recommended range of 40% to 55% RH.


1. The Dual Threat: High vs. Low Humidity

As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we calibrate your environment to avoid the two extremes that threaten uptime:

  • High Humidity (>60% RH): Leads to hygroscopic dust absorption. Dust on server heat sinks absorbs moisture, becoming conductive and causing "tracking" or short circuits. It also accelerates the oxidation of copper connectors.

  • Low Humidity (<30% RH): The air becomes an insulator rather than a conductor. Static charges build up on server chassis and floor tiles. A single spark from a technician’s hand can discharge thousands of volts into a $100,000$ USD blade server.


2. Precision Dehumidification via Reheat Coils

Standard air conditioners dehumidify by cooling air below its dew point, but this often makes the server room too cold. Precision Air Conditioners (PAC) solve this using a "Reheat" cycle:

  1. Cooling: The unit runs the compressor to strip moisture from the air.

  2. Reheating: Since the air is now too cold (e.g., 15°C), an electric or hot-gas reheat coil warms the air back to the setpoint (e.g., 22°C) before it enters the room.

  3. Result: Dry air at the correct temperature.


3. Ultrasonic and Steam Humidification

When the air becomes too dry (common during "Dry Seasons" or when cooling loads are low), we introduce moisture using two primary technologies:

  • Ultrasonic Humidifiers: Use piezoelectric transducers to create a cool mist. This is energy-efficient but requires Reverse Osmosis (RO) water to prevent "white dust" (mineral deposits) from coating your servers.

  • Electrode Steam Canisters: Boil water to create pure steam. This is highly sterile and mineral-free but consumes more electricity.


4. VFD Integration for Dew Point Control

We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on the cooling blowers to manage the "Latent Load" (moisture removal) dynamically.

  • Vapor Pressure Management: By adjusting the fan speed via the VFD, we can control how long the air stays in contact with the cold evaporator coil. Slower speeds remove more moisture (dehumidification), while higher speeds focus on "Sensible Cooling" (temperature only).

  • Sensors: We install high-accuracy wall-mounted and duct-mounted humidity sensors linked to the BMS (Building Management System) to prevent "hunting" between the humidifier and the AC.


5. Vapor Barriers and Room Integrity

Even the best humidifier will fail if the room isn't sealed. In KL's humid air, moisture will migrate through concrete, gaps under doors, and cable penetrations.

  • Epoxy Floor Sealing: We apply vapor-barrier coatings to the sub-floor to prevent moisture rising from the ground.

  • Fire Damper & Cable Seal Audit: We ensure all wall penetrations are fire-stopped and air-tight, preventing "wet" office air from leaking into the "dry" server environment.
