In the high-density computing hubs of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, cooling is the single largest operational expense for a data centre. Because Malaysian ambient temperatures frequently hit 32°C with humidity above 80%, standard air conditioning is insufficient. Data centre cooling requires Precision Cooling to manage high sensible heat loads and maintain the strict environmental envelopes required by ASHRAE TC 9.9.

1. Air-Based Precision Cooling (CRAC & CRAH)

Most data centres in Malaysia utilize air as the primary cooling medium. We design these systems to avoid "hot spots" and ensure uniform delivery.

  • Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC): These are Direct Expansion (DX) units that use refrigerant. They are ideal for small to medium server rooms where a central chilled water plant isn't feasible.

  • Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH): These units use chilled water from a central plant. They are the standard for large-scale enterprise data centres due to their high efficiency and capacity.

  • VFD Integration: We equip both types with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on the blowers. This allows the fans to "track" the server load—slowing down during low traffic to save energy and ramping up instantly during peak processing.


2. High-Efficiency Containment Strategies

To prevent the mixing of cold supply air and hot exhaust air (which forces the cooling units to work harder), we implement physical containment:

  • Cold Aisle Containment (CAC): The cold aisle is enclosed with glass or PVC ceilings and doors. This creates a pressurized "cold reservoir," ensuring every server—from the bottom of the rack to the top—receives air at the same temperature.

  • Hot Aisle Containment (HAC): The hot exhaust is captured and ducted directly back to the cooling unit's return. This allows the rest of the room to remain at a higher "ambient" temperature, significantly improving the efficiency of the heat exchange coils.


3. Liquid Cooling & In-Row Solutions

As rack densities exceed 15kW, traditional perimeter cooling often struggles. We deploy "Close-Coupled" cooling to bring the heat rejection closer to the source:

  • In-Row Cooling: Cooling units are placed directly between server racks. This shortens the airflow path and eliminates the need for a raised floor plenum.

  • Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx): A chilled water coil is attached to the back of the server rack. The server’s own internal fans push hot air through the coil, neutralizing the heat before it even enters the room.

  • Direct-to-Chip (Liquid) Cooling: For AI and high-performance computing (HPC), we implement cold plates that circulate coolant directly over the CPUs/GPUs, removing heat far more effectively than air ever could.


4. The Chilled Water Plant (The Energy Core)

For large-scale facilities, the efficiency of the central plant dictates the facility's PUE:
