Building Air Recirculation | Optimized Indoor Circulation

In the humid Malaysian climate, building air recirculation is a double-edged sword. While it is essential for energy efficiency—reusing already cooled air rather than constantly chilling 32C outdoor air—it can also lead to the buildup of CO2, pathogens, and odors if not managed with precision. To meet the 2026 DOSH Industry Code of Practice on IAQ, modern buildings must move away from "closed-loop" systems toward smart, filtered recirculation.

At EKG M&E, we engineer recirculation paths that maximize thermal retention while ensuring every cubic meter of air is scrubbed and oxygenated.

1. Advanced Filtration & Pathogen Scrubbing

Because recirculated air passes through the building multiple times, it can carry fine dust (PM2.5) and biological contaminants. We implement a "Defense-in-Depth" strategy within the Air Handling Unit (AHU):

  • MERV 13/14 High-Efficiency Filters: These are the primary shield, capturing up to 90% of fine particles and virus-carrying droplets that are recirculated from the office floor.

  • UV-C Germicidal Irradiation: We install UV-C lamps over the cooling coils. This ensures that any bacteria or mold spores caught in the recirculating loop are neutralized, preventing the AHU from becoming a "source" of infection.

  • Activated Carbon Adsorption: For offices with high chemical loads (printers, new carpets), we use carbon banks to strip out Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that accumulate during heavy recirculation.

2. Smart Mixing & Pressurization

The key to healthy recirculation is the "Mixing Box," where return air meets fresh outdoor air. We automate this balance using Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs):

  • Positive Pressure Management: We calibrate the recirculation and intake fans to maintain a slight positive pressure (+5 to +12 Pa). This ensures that filtered, cooled air is "pushed" toward the building perimeter, preventing hot, humid air from leaking in.

  • Demand-Controlled Ventilation (DCV): Our sensors monitor CO2 levels in real-time. If CO2 exceeds 800 ppm, the VFD automatically adjusts the dampers to decrease recirculation and increase fresh air intake until the air quality is restored.

  • The Cube Law Savings: By using a VFD to modulate fan speed based on actual cooling demand rather than running at 100%, you can reduce the fan's power consumption by nearly 50% during low-occupancy periods.

3. Energy Efficiency and Cooling Load

Recirculation is the most effective way to meet the targets of the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA).

  • Reduced Chiller Load: By recirculating 24C indoor air instead of 100% fresh 32C air, the thermal "lift" required by your chillers is significantly lower.

  • Enthalpy Control: We use smart sensors to determine the "Enthalpy" (total heat content) of the return air versus the outdoor air. The system automatically selects the most energy-efficient mix to maintain comfort without overworking the compressors.

4. Mechanical Health: FFT Vibration Diagnostics

High-volume recirculation requires AHU fans to operate under varying static pressures. To ensure 24/7 reliability, we employ Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Analysis:

  • Vibration Fingerprinting: We monitor the "frequency signature" of the recirculation motors. We can detect bearing wear or belt slippage caused by the increased resistance of high-efficiency filters months before a breakdown occurs.

  • Resonance Locking: We program the VFD to "skip" specific speeds that might cause the ductwork to vibrate or "drum," ensuring a silent office environment for your tenants.

Why Optimize Recirculation with EKG M&E?

  • Decades of MEP Background: We have engineered air distribution for Malaysia’s leading commercial towers and industrial cleanrooms for years.

  • Compliance Certainty: Our designs are fully aligned with DOSH 2026 and GBI (Green Building Index) standards.

  • Turnkey Integration: We handle the Ductwork Modification, VFD Panel Building, and BMS Logic required for a modern, smart recirculation system.
