  • How to change the calibrated reference leak in the Agilent HLD helium leak detector

This 4-minute video shows how to replace the internal calibrated reference leak in Agilent HLD helium leak detectors, and how to update the system to maintain calibration. Video transcript: Hello again from Agilent vacuum technologies. Today we will review how to replace the internal helium leak standard and the Agilent HLD Series helium leak detectors. The HLD is a staple in the leak test industry and continues the legacy of Varian leak detectors. The internal helium leak standard will need to be replaced once per year to comply with NIST certification. The leak standard icon is displayed in the top right of the display. If the icon is flashing blue, it will expire within 10 days. A solid blue icon indicates the standard has expired. The first step is to disconnect power. Then loosen the five thumb screws. Rotate the exhaust vent line to the horizontal position and lower the remote control antenna if included. And remove the back panel. Use a Flathead screwdriver to loosen the two screws holding the leaked standard. These are captured screws, so they are not lost during removal. Then carefully remove the cable that connects to the small circuit board on the internal standard. You can now remove the expired leak standard before installing the new leak standard. Make sure the expiration date is valid and the small brown O-ring is intact. Reattach the cable, line up the new internal standard and screw the two Flathead screws back into place. These should be hand tight. No torquing necessary. Make a note of the internal leak value, temperature, temperature compensation factor, and expiration date of the new standard. Reinstall the rear panel and re-tighten the five thumbscrews. Rotate the exhaust vent line and remote control antenna back to their vertical positions. Reinstall the power cable. And then power up the HLD. The updated values for this new internal standard need to be input manually. Press the menu button, then select the maintenance screen. Under the General tab, input the new values for internal leak value, in this case 1.2 to the negative 7, reference calibration leak temperature, in this case, 24.4 degrees, and temperature compensation factor. In this case, negative 0.3 degrees Celsius. Finally, input the expiration date, in this case, May 13th, 2021. Individually scroll up or down on the three data wheels to select the correct month, day, and year. Leak value, calibration, temperature and compensation factor all ensure an accurate calibration for the HLD. After a 20-minute warmup period, run a full internal calibration from the calibration screen. And once calibration is completed, your unit is fully operational and ready to go. Thanks for watching.
