DBKL and UEM Sunrise Advance Phase 2 of Kepong Metropolitan Park Lake Rehabilitation

14-Nov-2025

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 13) — UEM Sunrise Bhd, through its collaborative entity Mega Legacy (M) Sdn Bhd, has formalised a partnership with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to roll out Phase 2 of the rehabilitation plan for the lake at Kepong Metropolitan Park — one of the largest urban green lungs in Kuala Lumpur.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed on Thursday, marks the next stage of a multi-year restoration initiative focused on improving water quality, restoring ecological balance, and enhancing recreational facilities around the 106-acre lake.

Phase 2: Ecological Restoration and Upgraded Recreational Infrastructure

The latest phase will introduce targeted treatment systems and a structured long-term maintenance strategy, backed by findings from the University of Malaya’s environmental assessments in 2023 and Phase 1 works completed in 2024. These studies examined sediment buildup, nutrient levels and biodiversity to guide effective technical solutions.

Alongside water restoration measures, Phase 2 includes significant infrastructure upgrades designed to support:

  • Kayaking

  • Dragon boating

  • Jogging and cycling

  • Family and community recreation activities

This strengthens Kepong Metropolitan Park’s role as a major community destination, complementing neighbouring lifestyle and residential growth—including demand for commercial property in KL, nearby urban townships, and recreational amenities that uplift surrounding property values.

UEM Group’s Philanthropic Arm Co-Finances the Initiative

The restoration efforts will be partially funded by a grant from Yayasan UEM, the philanthropic arm of UEM Group Bhd. The lake sits adjacent to UEM Sunrise’s Kiara Bay township, which continues to shape the northern KL landscape and attract steady interest among homebuyers and investors.

This initiative also supports ongoing urban sustainability agendas, which indirectly contribute to broader demand for strategic real estate assets—from affordable homes to premium office space in Bukit Jalil, high-growth corridors with industrial land in Selangor, and expanding logistics hotspots requiring industrial property in the Subang area and factory units in Puchong.

DBKL: “A Great City Must Be Liveable and Lovable”

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif emphasised that the collaboration reflects DBKL’s commitment to strengthening the city’s environmental resilience through public–private–people partnerships.

“A great city is not only liveable but lovable,” she said. “Through collective effort, we are restoring a valuable public asset and shaping a shared space where identity, heritage and community pride can flourish.”

Mega Legacy chairman and UEM Sunrise independent non-executive director Datuk Azmar Talib echoed this view, noting that the lake plays an integral role in Kiara Bay’s long-term masterplan.

“Our responsibility is to enhance it as a clean, safe, and accessible public asset for everyone,” he said.

Long-Term Environmental Stewardship

The rehabilitation programme aligns with UEM Sunrise’s sustainability framework, which centres on Planet, People, Communities and Governance. Beyond physical works, DBKL and Mega Legacy will explore long-term environmental monitoring, public education initiatives and broader green partnerships.

The initiative underscores Kuala Lumpur’s push to elevate its urban green spaces—a complement to its wider transformation that includes smarter mobility networks, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable community development.
