Daily Industry Briefing
Today we picked out three pieces of news: one affects your freight cost, one affects your tax burden, and one affects customs clearance rules. Asian port congestion may drag on until just before Chinese New Year on 2027, squeezing capacity on China-Malaysia routes. The Budget lands on October 9, and the SST exemption list will directly change your landed cost. Meanwhile, local trade associations are pushing for cross-border e-commerce platforms to enforce the 10% tax on low-value parcels, which could weaken the direct-mail advantage.

HASTE TAKE
All three pieces of news point to the same thing: starting October, your landed cost will get harder to predict
Let's start with freight. Repeated typhoons across China have kept disrupting port operations, leaving about 8.5% of the world's container ship capacity delayed and stuck ! equal to 3 million TEU unable to move. As long as that capacity stays locked up, regional routes will keep feeling tight. The actual numbers are already in: Shanghai to Laem Chabang rose 22% in a week, hitting USD1609 per 40-foot container; Shanghai to Jakarta rose 12%, hitting USD2300. Malaysia's Port Klang and Tanjung Pelepas sit in the same transshipment network as these ports, so when ships get stuck elsewhere, your container is likely to end up queuing and facing price hikes too. Worse still, experts say this round of congestion could drag on right up to Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027 before things smooth out.
