Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel—a narrow passageway of bones and ligaments on the palm side of the wrist.
The median nerve controls sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger, as well as movement of some thumb muscles. When this nerve is squeezed or irritated, characteristic symptoms develop in the hand and wrist.
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Symptoms often begin gradually and may worsen over time:
-
Numbness or tingling in the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers
-
Pain in the wrist or hand, sometimes radiating up the arm
-
Weakness in the hand, especially difficulty gripping objects
-
Clumsiness or dropping items unexpectedly
-
Burning or electric shock–like sensations in the fingers
-
Symptoms may be worse at night or after repetitive hand use
Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
CTS usually develops when pressure increases within the carpal tunnel. Common causes and risk factors include:
-
Repetitive hand or wrist movements (typing, assembly work, prolonged mouse use)
-
Poor wrist posture, especially sustained bending or extension
-
Swelling or inflammation due to injury, arthritis, or tendon irritation
-
Pregnancy-related fluid retention
-
Medical conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or rheumatoid arthritis
-
Genetic factors, including a naturally smaller carpal tunnel
Often, CTS results from a combination of factors rather than a single cause.
What Happens If Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Is Ignored?
Ignoring CTS can lead to progressive and potentially permanent damage:
-
Persistent numbness that no longer comes and goes
-
Permanent nerve damage, reducing sensation in the fingers
-
Muscle wasting at the base of the thumb (thenar atrophy)
-
Loss of hand strength and coordination
-
Chronic pain that interferes with daily activities and sleep
-
In severe cases, irreversible loss of hand function, even after treatment
Early diagnosis and management—such as activity modification, wrist splints, physical therapy, or medical treatment—can prevent long-term complications.
