On Our Journey Through Life, Farewells Are the Hardest Lesson - Jambhala Memorial Services

On Our Journey Through Life, Farewells Are the Hardest Lesson

07-May-2025

There are moments in life we never expect, yet inevitably must face. Among them, saying goodbye to a loved one is the most difficult.
I never imagined that within just 48 hours, I would go through the most profound farewell of my life. It was an experience that made me truly understand that a funeral is not an end, but a continuation of love. And behind it all was the gentle and professional assistance of the Nirvana Memorial Garden team.
In this article, I want to share my first experience handling a funeral—from the initial confusion to the final sense of peace and completion. I hope it can offer some courage and direction to those who are facing, or will someday face, a similar journey.

1. The Sudden Loss—Time Stood Still
It was early in the morning, before sunrise, when I received a call from my brother.
"Grandma passed away in her sleep last night." Just one sentence—and I froze. My brother’s voice was choked with emotion, and I felt like I was suddenly detached from reality. My mind went completely blank.
After crying, my first thought was—what now? What should I do? Who do I need to inform? Do I contact the hospital or the authorities? What procedures need to be done? I had no idea.
Grandma had always been relatively healthy despite high blood pressure and diabetes. Her passing was so sudden, and I was completely unprepared. Then I remembered something a friend once told me:
"If something like this happens, just call Nirvana Memorial Garden. They will help you."

2. One Phone Call, Nirvana Immediately Arrived
I called Nirvana Memorial Garden’s 24-hour hotline. The person who answered spoke in a calm and warm tone. After I briefly explained the situation, she gently said:
"Please don’t worry. We’ll arrange for a funeral consultant to assist you immediately. For now, just stay with your family."

About 30 minutes later, a consultant named Mr. Lin arrived at our doorstep. Dressed neatly, with a solemn expression, he bowed upon entering to pay his respects to my grandmother.
Mr. Lin brought a simple “Funeral Process Guide” and walked us through each step: notifying the doctor, issuing the death certificate, police reporting, handling the body, setting up the wake…
What touched me most was that he didn’t speak in a commanding tone, but instead took on a supportive, companion-like role—like a seasoned friend gently guiding us through a chaotic and painful moment.

3. A Dignified and Warm Wake Setup—Beyond Expectations
My grandmother was a Buddhist, so we chose a traditional Buddhist funeral package from Nirvana, which included:
  • Wake setup (altar, photo, lights, floral arrangements)
  • Chanting monks and prayer team
  • Funeral items (paper offerings, mourning attire, incense, etc.)
  • Guest reception and condolence management
  • Professional emcee and assistants
I always thought funeral wakes would feel eerie and gloomy, but Nirvana’s setup changed my view completely: white flowers, soft lighting, and a simple yet dignified altar. Everything felt serene and warm, as if whispering to my grandmother:
"We won’t cry anymore. You can go peacefully."

After the setup was completed, Mr. Lin reminded us:
"You can play your grandmother’s favorite music or display her photos so that visitors can get to know the life she lived."

That night, we played Teresa Teng’s songs—her favorites from her younger days. Looking at the photo wall and her smiling face, we cried and smiled at the same time. It felt like we had met her again.

4. Every Detail Was Taken Care of—I Could Just Be With Grandma
Throughout the entire process, Nirvana’s team handled nearly every detail, allowing me—someone with no prior experience—to focus on supporting my family and processing emotions.
They helped us with:
  • Death certificate and government paperwork
  • Arranging the prayer ceremonies and funeral procession
  • Coordinating transportation and pick-up for guests
  • Providing meals and reception services
  • Handling the columbarium niche and final placement
Every detail was organized meticulously. They even gave us a checklist for paper offerings, prayer items, and timing for rituals.
On the day of the funeral, I saw the whole team dressed formally, conducting every ritual with utmost respect and seriousness. I overheard a neighbor whisper to my brother:
"This was a beautifully conducted funeral. It’s clear your family put in a lot of heart."

At that moment, my eyes welled up—not out of grief, but out of deep gratitude.

5. Peace After the Ashes Were Placed—And Peace in Our Hearts

Grandma’s ashes were placed in a niche at Nirvana Memorial Garden. Our family went together for the "An Zuo" (placement ceremony).
The columbarium was beautiful, solemn, and filled with the sounds of Buddhist chants and prayers. It felt like a place of blessing and protection.
When Grandma’s urn was respectfully placed, Mr. Lin led us through the final rites. I saw a hint of relief on my mother’s face—and in that moment, I felt completely at peace.

6. Not an “End”—But a “Completion”
I used to think funerals were the saddest part of life. But this experience taught me:
When someone is sent off with dignity and care, it is not an end, it is a beautiful completion.
And Nirvana Memorial Garden was the hand that helped us achieve that completion. Their professionalism was filled with warmth, their efficiency, full of humanity. In the moment of our greatest loss, they gave us stability and support.

7. Postscript: Don’t Fear Planning for the Future
This experience completely changed how I view "end-of-life planning." Death itself isn’t frightening—it’s the chaos and unpreparedness that hurt the most.
Many people avoid talking about pre-planning funeral contracts. But those who have gone through it know—it’s the most practical gift you can give your family.
I’ve already begun inquiring about a pre-planning contract for my mother, and even made initial plans for myself.
Not because I’m pessimistic—but because:
"I hope that when my time comes, my loved ones won’t have to go through confusion and panic."

8. Final Thoughts: Thank You, Nirvana Memorial Garden, for Letting Love Continue
To the team at Nirvana Memorial Garden, I sincerely thank you:
Thank you for your professionalism, kindness, and thoughtfulness. Thank you for walking with us through the hardest moment in life.
This farewell was no longer a cold ritual—but a goodbye filled with love and memories.
If you are currently thinking about arrangements for your elder family members, or even for yourself, give yourself a chance to understand the services Nirvana offers.

May every farewell be treated with gentleness.
