In-Row Cooling System Installation by EKG M&E Sdn Bhd

As rack densities in Kuala Lumpur data centers climb toward 10kW–30kW per rack, traditional "perimeter" cooling (CRAC units placed at the edge of the room) often fails to reach the center of the server rows. In-Row Cooling solves this by placing the cooling units directly between the server racks, neutralizing heat at the source and eliminating the need for high-pressure raised floor plenums.

EKG M&E Sdn Bhd provides specialized EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) for In-Row systems, both for new builds and high-density "hot spot" retrofits.

1. The Architecture: Close-Coupled Cooling

In-Row units capture hot exhaust air directly from the "Hot Aisle" at the rear of the servers, cool it, and discharge it into the "Cold Aisle" at the front.

  • Short Airflow Path: Because the air only travels a few feet, fan energy is drastically reduced compared to pushing air under a floor.

  • Scalability: You can add In-Row units as you add server racks. This "Pay-as-you-grow" model is ideal for Malaysian co-location providers.

  • Precision Control: Each In-Row unit can modulate its cooling based on the specific servers it sits next to, preventing "Over-cooling" of low-load racks.

2. DX vs. Chilled Water In-Row Units

As an HVAC and Clean Air Specialist, we select the medium based on your existing facility infrastructure:

Feature DX In-Row (Direct Expansion) CW In-Row (Chilled Water)
Coolant Refrigerant (R410A / R32). Chilled Water from central plant.
Best For Standalone rooms or small clusters. Large-scale enterprise data centers.
Installation Requires copper piping to roof. Requires insulated water piping.
Redundancy Independent per unit. Dependent on central pump/chiller.

3. VFD and Adaptive Control Logic

The efficiency of an In-Row system relies on its ability to "track" the server load in real-time. We utilize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and EC Fans to manage this:

  • Dynamic Fan Speed: The VFD adjusts the fan RPM based on the temperature difference ($\Delta T$) between the hot and cold aisles. If the server fans speed up, the In-Row unit speeds up to match.

  • Compressor Modulation: In DX versions, the inverter-driven compressor ramps down during low-traffic periods, maintaining a stable temperature without the high-wear "Start/Stop" cycles of legacy ACs.

  • BMS Integration: We link the In-Row controllers to your Building Management System, allowing for remote "N+1" rotation and emergency alerts.

4. Critical Installation Requirements

Installing In-Row cooling in a "live" environment requires surgical precision:

  • Condensate Management: Because these units sit directly next to servers, leak prevention is paramount. We install dual-pump condensate removal systems and high-sensitivity leak detection ropes at the base of every unit.

  • Vibration Isolation: We perform Vibration Analysis during commissioning. In-Row fans must be perfectly balanced to ensure they don't transmit mechanical resonance to the sensitive hard drives in the adjacent server racks.

  • Power Distribution: We coordinate the electrical sub-panels to ensure that the In-Row units are on a different circuit than the servers, preventing a single breaker trip from killing both the IT and the cooling.

Why Choose EKG M&E Sdn Bhd?

  • 34-Year Legacy in KL: We have successfully performed "live" In-Row retrofits for Malaysian banks and telcos where downtime was not an option.

  • Turnkey MEP Execution: We manage the Piping (Copper/Steel), Electrical Wiring, and Structural Support as a single integrated project.

  • PUE Optimization: We specialize in using In-Row cooling to target specific "Hot Spots," allowing you to raise your overall room temperature and lower your total electricity bill.
