The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) is shifting its focus towards local community concerns in the Johor state election, with data centre developments emerging as one of its key issues.
The party has raised concerns over the rapid expansion of data centres in Johor, arguing that investment growth must be supported by adequate infrastructure planning, particularly in areas such as water supply, electricity capacity and environmental management.
Muda president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the party is not against development but stressed that economic expansion should not come at the expense of residents’ daily lives.
Muda believes that addressing local issues could help strengthen its appeal among Johor voters as the state prepares for the election. The party is contesting four seats — Puteri Wangsa, Bukit Batu, Maharani and Simpang Jeram — as it seeks to position itself as a voice for accountability and community concerns.
Apart from data centre developments, Muda has also highlighted concerns over urban flash floods in Johor, especially as rapid infrastructure and private development continue across the state.
The party argued that flood issues are not only related to physical infrastructure but also involve governance, maintenance and accountability. Muda questioned whether existing guidelines are sufficient to address new challenges caused by rapid urbanisation.
Amira said the party aims to serve as a check and balance even if it is not part of the government, emphasising that effective governance requires a strong opposition role.
Muda continues to face challenges competing against larger political parties with greater resources. However, the party believes that candidate quality, policy focus and the ability to represent local communities remain important factors in gaining voter support.
The Johor state election has become a key political contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH), with both coalitions contesting all 56 state seats. PH has focused on the benefits of stronger state and federal cooperation, while BN has highlighted continuity and the performance record of the current Johor state administration.
