ECRL Construction Halted on MRR2 After Temporary Canopy Structure Collapses

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 18): Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) has temporarily suspended construction works for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) near the Gombak Toll Plaza after a temporary steel canopy collapsed onto a passing vehicle along the Batu Caves–bound stretch of the MRR2.

In a statement, MRL said the suspension is to allow full investigations by local authorities into the cause of the incident.

The temporary canopy had been erected to safeguard motorists from falling debris during ongoing road-under-bridge construction. MRL noted that installation of the canopy structures was completed on Oct 20, 2025, with removal scheduled for Nov 20 pending approval from the relevant agencies.

According to Bernama, the driver of the affected vehicle escaped without injuries. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department reported receiving an emergency call at 1.47pm and dispatched a team from the Selayang station. The steel components were found collapsed on a car, and members of the public had managed to rescue the woman driver, believed to be in her 40s, before firefighters arrived.

Earlier this month, MRL announced that the ECRL project had reached 88.08% overall completion following the successful delivery of the initial phase of civil works from Kelantan to the Gombak Integrated Terminal. The project remains on schedule, with Phase 1 targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

This latest incident highlights the importance of construction safety protocols across major national infrastructure projects—particularly in dense urban corridors where road users, businesses and nearby developments, including commercial property in KL, industrial land in Selangor, and matured hubs such as industrial property in the Subang area and factory zones in Puchong, are all closely interconnected.
