Good news for Malaysia’s green future! The government has just approved 13 new large-scale solar projects under the LSS PETRA 5+ program including one of the country’s biggest floating solar farms with a massive capacity of 200MWac.

Strong Demand for Solar Energy

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) opened bids for 2,000MWac of solar power. The response? Overwhelming! A total of 37 companies applied, offering more than 4,000MW of capacity, double the quota available.

After a strict evaluation, 13 successful companies were chosen, bringing in 1,975MWac of new solar capacity. This is the largest approval since the LSS program started in 2016.
 

Billions in Investment & Thousands of Jobs

These new solar projects are expected to generate RM6 billion worth of investments and create around 12,000 new jobs in Malaysia’s renewable energy industry. The first plants are set to start supplying electricity between 2027 and 2028.
 

Towards a 70% Green Energy Mix by 2050

PETRA’s vision is clear, Malaysia wants 70% of its electricity supply to come from renewable energy by 2050. The new projects will play a big role in reducing carbon emissions and building a sustainable future under the principles of Malaysia MADANI.
