This category of impact resistant glass product is for the protection of personnel by preventing the penetration of projectiles discharged from all variants of conventional firearms available.
Impacts from ballistic projectiles differ from hand-tools or common implements in several ways. The effect of an impact by a high velocity projectile with a small body mass, concentrated within a point surface area will generate a different result from, say, a blow from a sledgehammer.
The serious intent behind a ballistic attack requires bullet-resistant materials to fully meet the performance rating of the hazard level as specified in whichever Standards applicable. Formal certifications by recognized bodies is the basic endorsement of product acceptance by the market.
Classes of hazard levels are based, in ascending severity ratings, on the type of weapon, ammunition, impacting velocities, projectile design, number of shots to resist and other parameters that can affect the risk factor.
The spalling effect from such impacts is recognized as a hazard in some Standards, in which case the products has to be designed to be a non-spall grade to achieve the certification.
