If you've received an overweight fee and are unsure why it was charged, don’t worry—we’re here to explain how it works.

For most general cargo, overweight charges are uncommon. However, overweight fees apply in specific situations—particularly when a single piece of cargo exceeds the standard weight limit for sea freight.

When Is an Overweight Fee Charged?

When shipping by sea, a single piece of cargo should not exceed 500kg per cubic meter (CBM). This is because 1 CBM is considered the maximum space that can reasonably hold 500kg.
If your cargo exceeds this weight, an overweight surcharge will apply.




 

Example: How Is the Overweight Fee Calculated?

Let’s say you have:

• Volume: 1 CBM

• Actual Weight: 600kg

Since 600kg exceeds the 500kg limit:

600kg ÷ 500kg = 1.2 CBM

You’ll be charged based on 1.2 CBM instead of the original 1 CBM.
