Common Name: Moving Leaf Insect (Giant Leaf Insect)

  • Scientific Name: Phyllium giganteum

  • Family: Phylliidae

  • Classification: Phasmatodea (Leaf Insect)

  • Toxicity Level: Non-Toxic

  • Origin: Malaysia (Cameron Highlands)

  • Adult Size: 10cm - 12cm (Very Broad Body)

  • Lifespan: 10 - 12 months

  • Diet: Herbivore (Bramble, Oak, Guava, Mango leaves)

The Moving Leaf Insect (Phyllium giganteum) is the ultimate master of camouflage and the largest leaf insect species found in Malaysia. With a broad, flat body that perfectly mimics a green leaf—complete with veins and brown "decay" spots—it is nearly invisible in foliage. This species is parthenogenic in the wild (almost all are females) and is highly prized for its incredibly realistic appearance.

Notes: They require moderate humidity and good airflow. Stagnant air can be fatal, but air that is too dry causes molting issues. They are slow eaters and slow movers.
Housing Requirement: Use a mesh enclosure to ensure high ventilation. Do not overcrowd them, as they may accidentally nibble on each other if they mistake a fellow insect for a tasty leaf.

Why Source This Species:

  • Visual Perfection: The most "leaf-like" of all leaf insects, indistinguishable from nature.

  • Educational Value: Perfect for demonstrating evolution and camouflage in classrooms.

  • High Demand: Always a top seller for zoos, museums, and private collectors.
