Generational Technology. That was the name that was given to the incoming Titleist driver that was replacing the highly successful TS-based driver series, which finished with the TSI model. When Titleist launched the GT series, it introduced an advanced Proprietary Matrix Polymer (PMP). The material, which is a carbon composite derivative borrowed from the aerospace industry, meant that the GT would compete with the carbon-heavy models from its closest competitors. The use of PMP gave the performance boost that Titleist hoped for and that players loved. The GT Series became the dominant driver in PGA Tour players¡¯ bags, and amateurs benefited from the improvements in performance in the GT2 and a more accessible GT3 model. Now, the GT is being replaced by the GTS. In case you¡¯re wondering, the S stands for speed and stability; somehow, the Titleist GTSS just wouldn¡¯t look right. Speed and stability are buzzwords when it comes to driver tech, so does the new GTS series deliver? We¡¯ll take a closer look and share not only what the GTS drivers have to offer, but also the new GTS fairway woods. ¡ñ Titleist GTS Drivers: A Familiar Look With New Technology ¡ñ The Technology Behind Titleist GTS Drivers And Fairway Woods ¡ñ Titleist GTS Driver And Fairway Wood Models: Which One Fits Your Game? ¡ñ Why Custom Fitting Matters With The Titleist GTS Range Titleist GTS Drivers And Fairway Woods: A Familiar Look With New Technology When we think of Titleist clubs, we often think of beautifully crafted equipment aimed at better players. Titleist drivers and fairway woods, dating back to the original TS releases of 2018, have been very clean in their appearance. There are no aerodynamic aids, there are no ¡°lipstick¡± lines, or big alignment aids on the crown to make the club look more ¡°jazzy¡±. Titleist has opted for a simple black finish on the clubhead and kept the sole as simple as possible. The driver models designed for better player drivers feature traditional pear-shaped heads, while the more user-friendly models have their proportions neatly managed under the all-black colour schemes. If you played or looked at Titleist drivers from TS to GT, you¡¯ll appreciate the simple sculpted elegance of each model. The legacy continues in the GTS lineup. The drivers and fairway woods are simple and clean to look at, which in part comes down to tour feedback, but Titleist also knows it's part of its DNA, and it¡¯s what most amateurs would expect from a new Titleist product. The introduction of PMP in the GT line was in part to lower the head weight and use the saved weight more effectively in the head, but it was also used because Titleist wanted to ensure there was no difference in the acoustics and feel from its legacy titanium drivers. Titleist cared about golfers¡¯ sensory perceptions of a driver and what people expected from a Titleist driver, which would make it easier for a player to switch from an older model to the new model. With GTS, we see more of the same in these departments, and that¡¯s not a bad thing, because these drivers and the fairways look fantastic. But you shouldn¡¯t be putting a new driver or fairway wood in the bag simply because it looks amazing. The GTS has to perform, and it has to move the game on from the GT. So, it¡¯s now time to dive in and have a look at how Titleist is moving the needle with GTS. The Technology Behind Titleist GTS Drivers And Fairway Woods We¡¯ll break this section down into two parts. We¡¯ll start by looking at the GTS drivers, and then the GTS fairway woods. Titleist GTS Drivers: Lighter Heads, More Stability, and More Speed The GTS driver lineup is 30 grams lighter than the previous GT line, with Titleist achieving that saving by extending its PMP construction beyond the crown and into a fuller thermoform body design that also incorporates the sole. Along with the increased thermoform body, improved performance also comes in the shape of Titleist¡¯s extensive wind tunnel testing to refine the aerodynamics of each GTS head to increase clubhead speed for every level of player. The GTS line also introduces Titleist¡¯s new Speed Sync Face, which uses strategic reinforcement around the face structure to optimise ball speed from centred strikes while helping preserve speed on off-centre contact. For golfers, the intended benefit is more consistent performance across the hitting area. The third key feature the lighter GTS heads offer is what Titleist calls its Split Mass Frame, which takes the saved weight and splits it between the rear of the head to increase the head¡¯s stability (MOI), and moves the weight forward closer to the face to increase ball speeds for added performance. Weight placement is a big thing for the new GTS lineup, and the most visual representation of this can be seen in the GTS2, which has what Titleist calls its Dual Weighting System. Place the heavier weight in the front weight port, and the spin and launch rates will be lower. Move the heavier weight into the back, and the GTS2 becomes a highly stable clubhead. In the GTS3 and GTS4, a movable weight track can be positioned to focus the head¡¯s centre of gravity to dial in the exact shot shape, launch, and spin numbers. The movable weight technology blends perfectly with Titleist¡¯s SureFit adjustable hosel to optimise your numbers. The added flexibility around weight distribution and adjustability adds numerous possibilities, which can be dialled in when you have the driver or fairway woods fitted for your needs in a custom-fitting session. Titleist GTS Fairway Woods: New Weighting And More Fitting Options The GTS fairway woods feature enhanced use of composite materials, which, like the drivers, have been extended beyond the crown to the perimeter of the head. As we saw with the GTS drivers, the saved weight from the extensive use of composite material is then redirected internally to create a lower, deeper centre of gravity to help improve launch and spin characteristics. Visual differences between the GTS2 and GTS3 fairways are the depth of the face. In the GTS2, the face is shallower, which Titleist says is ideal for players who have a shallower angle of attack, and the GTS3 has a deeper face, which helps players who hit down more on the ball, helping them to manage launch and spin more effectively. You¡¯ll also note that the GTS3 fairway does have a slightly more compact look to it behind the ball compared to the GTS2. Carrying over the theme of increased flexibility from the GTS drivers, both GTS fairway woods feature movable weights positioned closer to the face, which can be dialled in during a fitting session to promote the ideal shot shape for your fairway wood. The GTS fairways follow the same classic look synonymous with Titleist products in recent years. The black crown is offset by a high-polished face, which is a direct result of feedback from staff players on tour, but also beneficial for amateurs since it gives the appearance of the face being bigger and more forgiving at address; a great combination for any player who potentially struggles with fairway woods from the tee and off the deck. Titleist GTS Driver And Fairway Wood Models: Which One Fits Your Game? Starting with the drivers, Titleist is launching three models, which are: ¡ñ GTS2 ¡ñ GTS3 ¡ñ GTS4 GTS2 The GTS2 is ideal for players who are looking for a little more consistency in performance by narrowing the gap between good and bad shots. The GTS2 features the most stretched profile from front to back of the three drivers, which gives the impression of a bigger profile behind the ball, which mid to high handicap players traditionally find more confidence-inspiring. GTS3 Through the TS and GT range, the 3 has been considered a favourite for tour players and better amateur players, who are looking to manage their spin more effectively, and aren¡¯t put off by the deeper face this model offers. The GTS3 will also be a preferred model for players who strike the ball pretty consistently and want to shape their tee shots more. GTS4 The GTS4 features a 460cc head, which is new for Titleist, who, in previous models, had the head profile as small as 430cc. The GTS4 will still be predominantly aimed at players who generate sufficient speed to produce the right spin and launch numbers to maximise carry distances on this model. While the head is bigger, Titleist engineers have created the effect of it looking a little more compact behind the ball, which, in part, comes down to the GTS4 having the deepest face profile out of the three models. GTS Fairways The model you end up with will likely come down to what your swing path is and how versatile you need your fairway woods to be. The deeper face of the GTS3 fairway might not suit some players with slower swing speeds who use their fairway woods a lot from the deck. We previously outlined the more compact head shape of the GTS3, so optics can also play their part in the selection process. The new GTS range works at many different levels, and the lines have become a little more blurred in terms of which model suits which player. The way to unlock the correct model for you comes down to being custom-fitted. https://www.vkgolfshop.com
